Continuing from the previous article: “Lin Zexu’s Password – The Legendary Future of Hong Kong”

Living is one of the rarest things in this world. Most people just exist, that’s all.

──Oscar Wilde

It’s almost a deserted island where it’s hard to even find a house.

You have obtained the cession of Hong Kong, but Hong Kong is just a deserted island where it is almost impossible to find a house. It seems obviously impossible for Hong Kong to become a major trading center. It is impossible for you to continue your current position in China. … …
You have obtained the Cession of Hong Kong, a barren island with hardly a House upon it…it seems obvious that Hong Kong will not be the Mart of Trade…it is impossible that you should continue to hold your appointment in China .

This is an excerpt from a letter sent by Henry Palmerston, the then British Foreign Secretary, to Captain Charles Elliot, the then British Commercial Director in China, on April 21, 1841.

Palmerston (1784-1865) came from a distinguished family. He joined the British government in 1807 and rose to prominence. He became the Foreign Secretary in 1830 and later served as the British Prime Minister twice. He was a well-known figure in the British political arena in the 19th century. His opinions should be reflected in his views. It can be regarded as one of the important views of the senior British government at that time. From this passage, it seems that Permason is a little dissatisfied with Elu’s acquisition of Hong Kong. In fact, Elliot was dismissed by the London government in the same year for “failure to comply with instructions” and was recalled to the country. It took a long time before he could take up his post again.

Hong Kong horoscope and worldly phenomena analysis trilogy

Talking about these anecdotes, I just want to bring out the point that the “birth” of the city of Hong Kong has many accidental or even accidental elements. In the author’s opinion, the relevant “birth” is like the “natal chart” of Hong Kong, which is fundamentally important to our understanding of Hong Kong’s past, present and future.

This point of view is related to a philosophical point of view on research methodology, which is also the theoretical basis of the analytical framework that this series of articles will always use. This point of view is that all phenomena in the world – whether they are phenomena in the natural world or the human world – develop from simplicity to complexity, and have an element of “path dependence” known as political and social science.

Basically, we believe that everything in the world is like a life. It has its origin first and then develops. It is very similar to the formation and continuous advancement of a river. Every time it encounters a new impact, the development will change. . If we can control the direction of development, the impact will become new nutrients for the river, deepening it, and bringing another impetus for its continued advancement, and the entire life will develop in the direction of a virtuous cycle. But if a river cannot cope with new shocks, it may weaken and decline, forming a vicious cycle and eventually dying. Therefore, we regard origin, evolution, and precipitation in the evolutionary process as a trilogy of phenomena, which also constitute the three focuses of our research and analysis.

If we fail to understand the present and past, how can we predict the future?

Importantly, if we accept the above philosophical framework, it will lead to another point of view, which is that a thorough understanding of the past and present is much more feasible than looking into the future. Undoubtedly, it is not easy to fully understand the past and present – many things in history have been debated for decades or even more than a hundred years without reaching a conclusion, but no matter how difficult it is, relatively speaking, it will always be better than It is much easier to see into the future, and only by understanding the birth and development of a phenomenon or life can we have a solid foundation to evaluate its future and its ability to cope with different challenges. Confucius said it well: “If you don’t know life, how can you know death.” Perhaps we can say that if we fail to understand the present and past, how can we predict the future?

Acknowledging the difficulty of predicting the future and our shortcomings in this area is not a sign of weakness. On the contrary, frankly acknowledging the difficulty of objective reality is the starting point and basis for actively facing and trying to solve relevant problems. Socrates, the “Father of Western Philosophy”, once said, “I only know one thing, that is, I actually know nothing.” (I know that I know nothing) On a similar proposition, our sages Confucius also once said, “Knowing is knowing, not knowing is not knowing.” We think this sentence of Confucius is profoundly wise, and may even be more worthy of careful consideration than Socrates’ famous sayings.

Of course, not many people hold this view. The mainstream view in the market is that the past is a matter for historians, and our focus should be on the future. In fact, in different generations, there are always many experts and prophets with different bold predictions. The author has indeed met some talented people. Even if they don’t know much about things, they can still speak clearly and plausibly. If you only talk to them for one or two hours, it is not easy for ordinary people to detect any flaws. These are actually some very high attainments, but these remarks may be more like special skills in lobbying or psychological counseling, and may not have anything to do with research and the pursuit of truth.

The importance of understanding the Hong Kong horoscope

It is worth noting that the philosophical framework we proposed is actually supported by certain empirical experience. The experience of many people is that the accuracy of predictions such as fortune-telling, Ziwei Dou Shu, and Iron Table Divine Calculation is amazing, and these predictions rely only on the time and horoscope of the person concerned. The author does not think that I have enough knowledge to evaluate and judge the subject of arithmetic. I just feel that it is not a simple subject, and its principles are not pure statistics and experience.

In the final analysis, the structure of human beings and everything in the universe is ultimately matter. The time when we are born can be regarded as the time when our lives are officially connected with everything in the universe. The relative positions of the stars in the universe at that time, as well as the stages at which the forces of the universe are operating, are closely related to our personality or cellular genetic information (DNA). ) has a certain relationship, and it is not impossible or unimaginable…

In any case, the author’s opinion is that Hong Kong’s birth chart, as well as its past experiences, have a subtle and inextricable relationship with whether it can cope with current challenges this time. And in conjunction with the above mentioned The “Lin Zexu Code” can vaguely outline a path for thinking about the future of Hong Kong legend. In the next chapter, I will discuss Hong Kong’s destiny in more depth.
