Continuing from the above article: “One word: “Modest” – the future of Hong Kong’s legend”

“King Wen was restrained and acted out the Book of Changes, while Zhong Nie acted in the Spring and Autumn Period.”
─ Sima Qian, “Historical Records: Report to Ren An”

In the above, the author mentioned that Zhou Gongdan once said: “There is a saying in “Yi”, which is big enough to protect the world, medium enough to protect the country, small enough to protect one’s own body, and it is called modesty.” The author believes that Zhou Gong’s “Qian” hexagram This view is worthy of attention, because his father was King Wen of Zhou, and King Wen of Zhou was the original author of “Book of Changes”, the “Book of Changes” that has been circulated so far. King Wen of Zhou is a very important and legendary figure in Chinese history. It is said that his status is comparable to that of Yao, Shun and Yu. Therefore, the mental journey of King Wen of Zhou during his performance of “The Book of Changes” is worthy of our careful consideration, and it also provides a lot of inspiration for how Hong Kong should deal with the current situation.

King Wen of Zhou, surnamed Ji Mingchang (1213-1117 BC), was the leader of the Zhou clan at the end of the Shang Dynasty. He was generous in benevolence and courteous to virtuous people, and won the support of the people. However, this aroused the suspicion of King Zhou of the Shang Dynasty. Later, driven by slander, King Zhou imprisoned the 84-year-old Ji Chang in the prison of Jiangli City. At the beginning of his arrest, King Wen of Zhou couldn’t figure out why he ended up behind bars despite being so loyal throughout his life. This unforgettable sadness made King Wen restless.

The insights gained by King Wen as he gazed at the night sky

According to records, one night, King Wen couldn’t sleep, so he got up and put on his clothes, stood in front of the small window of the prison, stared at the night sky, and remembered how similar his current situation was to what his father had experienced more than 40 years ago – King Wen’s father Ji Li was a general of the Shang Dynasty and was victorious in every battle. However, this aroused the jealousy of King Wen Ding, the grandfather of King Zhou of Shang. He deceived Ji Li into Chaoge, seized all the spoils, and then imprisoned Ji Li. and tortured him to death.

This also reminded King Wen of the time when Chengtang had a high reputation, which aroused the jealousy of Xia Jie, so Xia Jie sent envoys to summon him to the capital of Xia King and imprisoned him in prison. Later, Cheng Tang survived a narrow escape and returned to his country. He responded to the call of the princes in the world to attack Xia, and finally destroyed the Xia Dynasty. He was then elected as the emperor and became the founding king of the Shang Dynasty. King Wen thought that since King Zhou was so unkind Unjust, should I follow the example of Cheng Tang, the founder of the Shang Dynasty, and uphold justice for heaven?

Legend has it that at this moment, King Wen saw the stars in the sky, with the sun, moon and stars all in their places and performing their duties. It was as if he had gained insights from the celestial phenomena, and he suddenly thought, would the human affairs on earth and the rise and fall of dynasties also be the same? So? He realized at that time that the laws governing the universe should also apply to the human world! As King Wen thought about it, he felt like he was enlightened and suddenly transcended from the misery of grief and entanglement. He then made up his mind to find out the laws governing the ups and downs of the world, so as to overthrow King Zhou and seek justice for himself and his father.

So King Wen took yarrow from the garden, folded it into several sections, and used his memory to lay out the hexagram diagram of the innate eight trigrams on the ground, and continued to deduce it over and over again. King Wen understood his own destiny and the mission of the Ji family from different hexagrams, and also saw the laws of operation of everything in the world. On the basis of the innate Bagua, King Wen rearranged the order and deduced the Acquired Bagua, which was combined with the innate Bagua created by Fuxi in legend to form the eighty-eight and sixty-four hexagrams of the “Book of Changes” that we see today. It is the root of Feng Shui, numerology, arithmetic and other knowledge later developed by the Chinese nation. Some commentators even deduced that the “Book of Changes” is the first classic of China. It is not only the first and the beginning of the group of classics, but also the overall source of Chinese culture.

Starting a business at a super old age, but with unprecedented achievements

From this perspective, “The Book of Changes” can be regarded as the brainchild of King Wen who spent seven years in prison, injecting strong vitality into the wordless heavenly book “The Book of Changes”. The sixty-four hexagrams may seem simple, but they contain deep mysteries. King Wen probably integrated his life-long reflections, perceived missions, strategies for defeating Zhou and establishing the Zhou dynasty, rules for educating the prince, ways to govern the country and the people, etc. into the hexagrams. inside. It is worth noting that King Wen was 84 years old when he was imprisoned and 91 years old when he was released from prison. He can be regarded as a “super-old entrepreneur.” But the miraculous thing is that not only did he succeed in starting a business, but the entire Zhou Dynasty lasted for 800 years, making it the longest dynasty in Chinese history. Therefore, his achievements are unprecedented and can even be called one of the biggest undertakings in Chinese history. . Then, will King Wen’s hard work be the secret to achieving great things? In any case, Hong Kong should be able to draw two lessons from King Wen’s case.

First of all, no matter how great the difficulty is, it is not all hopeless. Historically, the test of adversity is the prelude to great undertakings. The quotation quoted at the beginning of this article, “King Wen then performed the Book of Changes; Zhongniee composed the Spring and Autumn Annals” comes from Sima Qian’s “Historical Records: Report to Ren An”, and The following sentences are “Qu Yuan was exiled and wrote “Li Sao”; Zuoqiu was blind, but he wrote “Guoyu”; Sun Tzu Binjiao revised the “Art of War”; Bu Wei moved to Shu, and the biography “Lü Lan” shows that in In the history of Chinese culture, many great achievements were caused by difficulties.

In addition, another revelation from the case of King Wen of Zhou is that in order to achieve great things, there may really be certain rules that can be followed. From a certain perspective, the entire “Book of Changes” can be seen as a guide on how to obtain help and favor from the way in which everything in the universe operates. In the next chapter, I will further talk about the “Qian” hexagram and its subtle relationship with the third guideline of the Tao Te Ching that I mentioned earlier.
