Art & Life

“Art is a human activity having for its purpose the transmission to others some of the highest and best feelings to which men have risen.….”

Leo Tolstoy

“The work of art is the object seen sub specie aeternitatis; and the good life is the world seen sub specie aeternitatis. This is the connection between ethics and aesthetics….”

Ludwig Wittgenstein

Elon Musk has made a remark in a recent interview that he thinks there is a very high probability that the world we are living in is actually an illusion created by a more advanced civilization.

Be that as it may, the fact remains that what we feel about the world we find ourselves in are genuine as far as we are concerned. We have moments of joy; moments of sorrow; and we do feel sad and lonely some of the time. And it appears that humanities are created in such a way that we will feel happier if there are others who seems to be sharing similar feelings with us.

And there is also a theory which says that it is only after we have tasted and gone through many of these human situations that we can be transcended to another state where we can see the world in a different light.  As such, our life experiences may constitute so to speak, the “existential ladder” where we can “climb through it; stand on it; and then above it  –  and then we see the world rightly.” And such state of serene silence may well be what Buddha has referred to be the state of “awakening” or “enlightenment.”

It is not our purpose to give a definite answer to this question. We just take it as self-evident that human beings are so created that we would find our lives to be  happier or at least more bearable if one can find that there are other people sharing similar feelings or one can share the feelings of others.

Wittgenstein has once described his role as like a tourist guide for the City of London. However, instead of showing just the major landmarks, his approach is to walk back and forth through many of the side streets or areas where many people may not go which are like taking some “snapshots’ of the city. Then after multiple back and forths around the many “sketches of landscape” of the London city, one probably can gradually develop a feel about how the City of London is like.

So this section is about taking some snapshots on how life is like.
